"These guitars were built as a commemorative series to the 20 year anniversary of Gibson’s Custom Shop, when it was originally ran by Tom Murphy and Edwin Wilson who many feel were the founders behind recreating today’s replicates of the famed original late 50’s and early 60’s bursts. Who better than the original masters to build these – right? And – The woods used were personally selected by Tom and Edwin, and the best part - Tom Murphy actually painted the finish on this guitar. Understand – this is NOT Tom’s famous aged & checked finish, it is a stock period correct nitrocellulose finish sprayed by Tom with a special paint process that patinas the paint and hardware to slightly age it over time – today it looks new old stock. Further, all attention to detail to replicate an actual 1959 burst was put into this guitar including use of hide glue, correct neck truss, nitrocellulose markers and all correct body angle metrics. It is the closest replica to a real 50’s Les Paul done by Gibson, to date."
Body and Neck
The body of the 20th Anniversary 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue is made from a single piece of solid, lightweight mahogany topped with a beautifully figured maple top hand-selected by Edwin Wilson and Tom Murphy. The neck is made from solid quarter-sawn mahogany and carved to the beloved ’59 profile, then topped with a one-piece rosewood fingerboard featuring aged celluloid trapezoid inlays. The guitar’s top is finished in a luscious gently faded sunburst dubbed “Murphy burst,” with genuine red aniline dye on the back and neck, all in nitrocellulose lacquer.
Pickups and Electronics
The original PAF humbucking pickups are a crucial part of the “burst tone” in any original late-’50s Les Paul, and Gibson Custom created its Custom Buckers to capture all the sonic glory of the originals. Made with Alnico III magnets, with coils scatter-wound to precision specs, these pickups are essentially clones of the originals. They’re routed through the traditional four-knob control section with CTS™ potentiometers and a three-way Switchcraft™ switch, with tone shaped by “bumble bee” tone capacitors.
Period-correct hardware graces the 20th Anniversary 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue throughout, including reissue Kluson™ Deluxe “green-key” tuners, an ABR-1 Tune-o-matic bridge, and a lightweight aluminum stopbar tailpiece—all nickel-plated. The binding retains the accurate vintage color, as do the pickup rings and pickguard, and the guitar carries a traditional black/white “bell” truss-rod cover.
